Problem Description

Leeward Renewable Energy (LRE) is a growth-oriented renewable energy company that owns and operates a portfolio of 24 renewable energy facilities across nine states in the U.S., totaling more than 2,500 MW of installed capacity. The company is actively developing new wind, solar, and energy storage projects in energy markets and is focused on building sustainable solutions for clean-renewable energy. Their vision to harness the world with renewable energy required taking some bold and deliberate steps to deliver reliable clean energy through innovation and adopting digitization.  In this journey, LRE started facing some challenges in managing its power grid stability which resulted in power outages and customer complaints.

Solution Approach

Conducting Grid Analysis

To get into the root of the problem being arised, VE3 analyzed the infrastructure, identified existing gaps/inefficiencies, and determined the level of readiness for integrating renewable energy sources into the grid. Following the analysis, we identified that the grid was being overloaded, infrastructure was too complex, inappropriate integration of renewable energy sources was implied, and the need for real-time monitoring and control was necessitated.

Implementing Grid Monitoring System

To optimize grid performance, VE3 installed a customized grid monitoring system that integrates different technologies such as IoT devices, machine learning algorithms, and cloud computing platforms. This system will monitor the power grid in real-time, detect issues promptly, and take proactive measures to prevent power outages. Furthermore, to improve grid capacity, we upgraded LRE's existing infrastructure and added more capacity to handle the increasing demand.

Utilizing Predictive Analytics

To analyze power consumption patterns, forecast equipment failures and prevent downtime, VE3 used predictive analytics/machine learning algorithms which help to take proactive measures to prevent power outages and ensure stable grid performance. We recommended load balancing solutions as well to distribute power evenly across the grid. Additionally, we built a data analytics platform for real-time monitoring of grid stability in order to track the performance of the grid in real-time and detect any issues that could impact power stability.

Outcome

Together, the LRE and VE3 team successfully implemented the solution which is already delivering results with more accurate and holistic insights. The implementation of the grid monitoring system enabled the company to detect issues quickly and take proactive measures to prevent power outages, resulting in increased grid stability and customer satisfaction. The improvements in grid capacity and load balancing also improved grid performance, enabling LRE to handle the increasing demands. And, the use of predictive analytics algorithms to analyze power consumption patterns enabled them to identify potential issues and take proactive measures to prevent power outages, resulting in stable grid performance. Conclusively, this solution has the potential to accelerate the journey and harness the world with renewable energy.
